| "I am not sure where to start, having now been back on the Islands for ten days or so trying to get back to normal - whatever that is supposed to be??- And trying to get my head around what has and what didnt happen in the last month. I have been completely overwhelmed by all the messages which have been left for us on this site, and want to offer my thanks to each and every one of you that has taken time and effort to offer support not only before, but after that Friday the thirteenth.
There are also so many people to thank as Tim has done (June 26th), for everything which got us to the start line on June 1st. In not wanting to repeat Tims words (sorry, but Im going to), it can not be overstated that without that first move from Robert and Lucy from Tresco Estate our challenge would not have gone past the planning stage – my sincere thanks go out to you for giving us that chance. In addition we are indebted for their introduction to us of further major sponsors. With Dean and Euan (of Tresco Estate) tireless efforts we were introduced to Francis, Puffin and of course Archie Moor of European Pension Managements who as well as becoming being our major sponsor, they have continued to help us in so many other ways; they came out to New York with us to send us on our way, flew to Gibraltar to wine and dine us, and even returned to Scilly with us. Just great great people I am now privileged to know. Of our other sponsors being the Isles of Scilly Steamship Co, Mercury PR and Nixon and Co, I want to thank in particular Andrew May who in addition to representing the Steamship Co, gave us additional help and also travelled out to New York to see us off. In hearing that due to problems with the boat clearing customs and that we had only 2 1/2 days to load and complete the boat, he came straight from the airport to the yard, immediately took of his jacket and demanded we give him jobs to do – and then continued to help us out until completion. Outstanding Andrew! Thank you so much.
Ginger Jim and Dr Vic Heaney, who have been with us since the start, have worked tirelessly behind the scenes and have been rocks for us all along – I will never forget that – thanks guys, there is so much that you have done the extent of which only you two truly know how much. We owe you forever.
I also wish to thank Amanda and Simon from Woodvale who have worked with us, for us, and have supported and encouraged us all the way to start day New York. It was a hard journey to the start line in many ways but with your help and experience we got there. Not only that but for all the behind the scenes work in getting us from Gibraltar back to Scilly - without our Passports - no mean feat! Much hardware for the boat was also loaned by Simon for the trip such as the life raft, epirbs, satellite and SeeMe beacons . . . . . although we now have a short term problem . . . . . . we know exactly where we left them, in the same place as amongst other things, Carl Theakstons grab bag contents, Roy Finleys Watermakers, Mark Terrys Sat Phone and Ginger Jims oranges – to all of you we thank you, will see you right guys very soon - promise.
Other thanks must go to all the good people at the RNLI training centre at Poole where we completed our sea survival course. Without doubt this world class training saved our backsides – the one thing from the training that stuck in my mind above all else that night in the water whilst trying to right the boat in the dark, getting colder and colder was DETERMINATION (to survive). We had it - We did. Thank you all.
Speaking for myself I have to be honest and say that some of the messages which make me feel quite uneasy are those which suggest us as being Heroes and Brave. Although flattering it has got to be realised that We alone, chose to attempt this challenge and put ourselves where we did. The brave and the heroes in our adventure were not us but the likes of Falmouth Coastguards, the U.S Coastguards, Luke and his crew on the Hercules C-130J and of course Captain Rageesh and all the officers and crew on the Gulf Energy Maritime Tanker Gulf Grace, all to whom we owe our lives.
Now after more then a week at home, the support we had afloat is still here for us now in our time of huge disappointment and frustration. Hi – good to see you home safe has been heard so many times from so many people – but it is heard and appreciated every single time and reinforces my fortune to have these Islands and their people as Home.
So what next?
We have had the offer of another boat, promise of continuing further sponsorship if we want it and support from all around the globe from many people known, as yet unmet as well as many former ocean rowers to go and have another crack at it the record – we know it is doable!
But.
We all have parents who have worried far worse and gone through more then Im sure we can imagine, I have my two girls Sophie and Evie who will for me be considered above all else in the future –
But when the dust settles - pipe and slippers? or get back on that horse?

We are just very sad, for everyone involved, that the ‘adventure’ did not work out to plan. You would have got home in record time. This time last week we were on the top of the Rock of Gibraltar looking down on the Gulf Grace not realising it was you (probably playing ping pong) and wondering where all the monkeys were (nothing happens very early on a Sunday morning in Gibraltar – even the monkeys have a lie in!) We were expecting to see the Gulf Grace sailing up the Straits not sitting in a queue! Archie is busy, at this moment, testing all his toy boats in the bath trying to find a ‘self-righting’ one – so far the Roman Galleon is looking good! We are back on Tresco next week so you can buy me a drink and Francis and I will tell you war stories about being an ocean rowing sponsor – we are a hardy lot – getting up (and down) the side of the Gulf Grace (it was the bit getting to the metal gang plank that was such fun – rope ladders etc……………….!) What it was like when you did it first time round, God only knows!! | "Finallly i'm in a position to read and reply to the overwhelming amount messages of support from neighbours, friends and South Americans that i shall probably never meet! not to make it sound like a Paltrow-esque oscar acceptance speech there are so many people to thank throughout the entire process.
The murmers of 'it'll never happen' gave us a determination from October 2006 and it is a great testament to our families, friends and supporters that we began our row on June 1st. the trials and tragedies of last year inspired us to make the most of the oppurtunity to give our community something to celebrate, and it was not until 7 days in that we realised quite the impact we were having!
i think i can confidently say that we were all coping well with the shifts, sleep and snacks and every stroke was greated with enthusiasm and an absolute desire to row4home. it felt as if the Bishop was just over our shoulders from the first stroke and we never doubted our own, or each others, commitment and had full confidence that we were up to the challenge.
after 13 days and 700 miles the north atlantic forced our hand into changing our focus and surviving our new situation. i will always be indebted to the other 3 boys for their calm, precise reaction to the situation and decisions that we were forced to make which resulted in our determination in the face of overwhelming odds.
The complete professionalism and skill shown by Falmouth and U.S coastguards and the entire crew of Cpt Rageesh's Gulf Grace meant that we are in a position to reroup and reflect on so much that had happened in such a short amount of time.
firstly i must thank Robert and Lucy for all there support 18 months ago that meant this 'mermaid-aided' plot could see us with a boat to play with. Also ginger jim who has been there from the start and no doubt lived and breathed every stroke! Francis and Puffin who got us 'in and out of this mess!' and made sure we got back home safe to our families and of course anyone that sent thoughts, messages or prayers our way.
i hope i dont forget anyone but if i put a list of names i hope you see yours but crucial parts were played by mark and susie,rob munslow,pete rowlands,roy finlay, carl theakston,john ricksen, simon gould, the dicksons, all the gang in Utah, cameron+archie and the family, twynams, NJ pat, and simon and amanda.
obviously my friends and family are the reason why i did this and the reason why i made it, out so thankyou and i hope the worry was worth it.
so whats next...? i was thinking i might put a trcking beacon on my head so that my mum will always now where i am and give everyone something to do when they're in 'boring french lessons', or just unicycle down Everest!

| "Pat, I am stationed in Elizabeth City, NC. I work and fly on C-130J's. They are new to the US Coast Guard. Infact right now only 3 out of the 6 C-130J's have mission systems for helping in search and rescue, the 3 others will be outfitted later. On the night the Scilly Boys needed us we flew tail# 2006, this was the first time we were able to use our new mission system for search and rescue. Even with our mission system up and running it was very hard to see their raft in the cold water. The Gulf Grace did an outstanding job finding the raft after we gave them the gps location and then getting the guys out of the raft. You all did as much as can be expected in your preparation , having been involved to some degree I can honestly say you took this on in a wholly professional manner as did Woodvale .
She got you lads! that's ultimately all there is to it. Youve experienced significant support which will hopefully encourage you to try again . Look upon this as a trial , your performance and the boat's was noteable given the weather.
Keep the equipment for next year and come back to race Orca and La Mondiale .
WARNING , next year will drive you nuts as your forced to wait to "get back on the horse ". and you thought the North Atlantic torment was over !!!!
